Winemaker Manuel Fariña has made special mention to "the quality of this year's entries" and "the difficulty facing the jury every year to choose the 40 paintings" that make up the year long exhibition held in the winery and on the website all year. PRIMERO: A HISTORY OF WINE AND ART

6 years ago the winery organised its first competition to chose the image of its PRIMERO wine, the region's first modern whole berry fermented wine. However, the relationship with Primero and art dates back much further. To 1995 infact, when Manuel Fariña was inspired by a Dutch customer to create Primero. For the first vintage, Manuel chose Dutch artist Van de Braak to create the label. Later, Spanish artists and current members of the jury, Fernando Lozano and Salud Parada were given the annual task of dressing Fariña's bright young Tempranillo.

Previous winners of the competition include:

Antonio Carretero (2006),

Chao Cheng Huang (2007),

Manuel López de la Fuente (2008),

Lola Catalá (2009)

and Enrique Malmierca (2010).
